The workhorse of the line-up. At 4" caliper a live oak is large enough to read as a real tree on day one, light enough to handle without heavy equipment, and priced so you can plant a whole street rather than a single specimen.
Best for: Volume plantings, subdivisions, buffer rows and budget-conscious phases.

6 to 6.5 inch caliper

Our most requested size and the one where 12-foot spacing shows most clearly — these heads are noticeably wider than 6" trees grown in tight rows. Big enough to anchor an entrance, still efficient to transport and install.
Best for: Commercial entries, streetscapes, amenity areas and municipal projects.

The step-up size. Where a plan calls for immediate presence — a courtyard, a plaza, a monument entry — a 7" live oak delivers canopy that a smaller tree will need eight to ten years to match.

A finished shade tree. Full, spreading head with the horizontal branch structure live oaks are prized for. This is the size that makes a new development look established the week it opens.

Our largest stock and the reason people drive to Alachua. Thirty years of growing practice in one tree: heavy trunk, high-branched, wide canopy. Limited numbers — these are not replaced quickly.
Best for: Statement trees where the landscape has to look decades old on opening day.

Florida Grades & Standards for Nursery Plants is a published state grading system. It assesses a tree on trunk form, branch structure and attachment, canopy density and symmetry, root system, and overall vigour. Grade #1 is the specification most commercial and municipal jobs are written against.
It matters because it is checkable. An inspector can walk a delivery and hold it to the standard. We have grown only Florida #1 live oaks since 1992, which means there is no lower-grade stock on our farms that could end up on a load by accident.

The things buyers ask us most often, answered plainly.
Florida Grades & Standards for Nursery Plants is the state grading system that defines an acceptable tree by trunk form, branch structure, canopy density, root system and overall vigour. Grade #1 is the standard most commercial and municipal specifications are written against. Conser Trees produces only Florida #1 live oaks — there is no lower grade on our farms.
Field-grown. Every tree is grown in the ground across five farms in Alachua County, Florida, on 12-foot spacing. Field-grown trees develop heavier trunk caliper and broader canopies than comparable container stock.
It depends on how quickly you need shade. A 4" caliper tree is roughly 12–14 feet tall and is the efficient choice for volume plantings. A 6–6½" tree stands 16–20 feet with a 10–14 foot spread and is our most requested size. An 8" or larger tree reads as an established, finished shade tree the day it is planted.

Spacing determines canopy width. Trees planted tightly compete for light and grow tall and narrow. On 12-foot centres each tree gets full sun on every side and builds a wide, well-furnished head with strong scaffold branches — which is the whole reason to plant a live oak.
