Buy a Real Shade Tree, Not a Stick

Field-grown Florida Number 1 live oaks from 4 inch to 10 inch caliper, direct from a family farm in Alachua, Florida. From $275 — the same trees planted at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium and SeaWorld.

The live oak in a big-box parking lot is a whip in a container. It will shade your driveway around 2040. The trees on our farm have been in the ground for years, and the smallest one we sell already looks like a tree. That is the whole difference, and it costs less than most people assume.

The problem

What usually goes wrong — and what we do about it.

Why the tree you bought never grew

  • Garden-centre live oaks are sold at 1"–2" caliper. Ten to fifteen years pass before they shade a patio.
  • Container stock is often root-bound, and a circling root system quietly limits the tree for the rest of its life.
  • Nobody at the register can tell you the grade, the caliper, or how the tree was grown.
  • Landscape installers mark the same tree up two or three times over what the grower sold it for.

What buying from the farm changes

  • Every tree is field-grown to Florida Grades & Standards #1 — the grade specified for stadiums and municipal projects.
  • Our entry size is 4" caliper, roughly 12–14 feet tall. Our largest is 9–10" caliper with a canopy 20 feet across.
  • You buy at grower prices, published on this site, with no landscape markup in between.
  • Come out to Alachua and pick the actual tree. You are choosing a specimen, not a SKU.

Why buy from the farm

What you get from Conser Trees.

  • Shade this decade

A 6" caliper live oak stands 16–20 feet with a 10–14 foot spread on the day it is planted. A garden-centre tree needs twelve years to get there.

  • Grower pricing, published

$275 for a 4", $500 for a 6" on current promotion, up to $1,900 for a 9–10" specimen. The same list every contractor sees.

  • The grade that stadiums specify

Florida #1 is a real, checkable standard. It is what we grow, whether the tree is going to a university campus or a front yard.

  • Wider canopies by design

Our 12-foot spacing gives every tree room to spread. You are buying canopy width, which is the entire point of a live oak.

  • A Florida native built to last

Live oaks handle hurricanes, drought and Florida sand better than nearly anything else, and routinely outlive the houses they shade.

  • Pick your own tree

Call ahead and walk the rows in Alachua. Choose the specimen you want rather than accepting whatever comes off the truck.

Questions

Residential buyers ask us…

How much does a large live oak tree cost?

Directly from our farm: $275 for a 4" caliper tree, $650 for a 6–6½" (currently $500 on promotion), $1,000 for a 7–7½", $1,600 for an 8–8½", and $1,900 for a 9–10" caliper specimen.

How big is a 4 inch caliper live oak?

Typically 12–14 feet tall with a 6–8 foot spread — already a real tree, and our most popular size for homeowners planting more than one.

Can I come out and choose my own tree?

Yes. Call 352-870-4093 ahead of time and we will arrange a time for you to walk the rows in Alachua and pick your specimen.

Why buy from a farm instead of a garden centre?

Size, grade and price. Garden centres sell 1"–2" caliper container stock that needs a decade to produce shade. We sell field-grown Florida #1 trees starting at 4" caliper, at grower pricing.

Are live oaks a good choice for a Florida yard?

Live oak is native to Florida, highly wind-resistant, drought-tolerant once established, and among the longest-lived shade trees available here. It is the classic Florida canopy tree for good reason.
